What the readings mean
| Level | Loudness of the last moment, in dBFS (0 is the maximum). Normal speech at a desk should peak around −30 to −12 dBFS. If it stays below −45, the mic is far away, muted or the input volume is low. |
| Noise floor | The level when you are silent. Below −60 is quiet; above −45 means a fan, hum or a noisy USB mic — noise suppression in your call app will fight your voice. |
| Waveform | Should be a flat line when silent and clear peaks when you talk. Flat while talking means the wrong device is selected or it is muted. |
Mic works here but not in your app?
Then the microphone and the operating system are fine. The app is listening to another device, is muted, or lacks permission: Zoom · Teams · Discord · Google Meet.
No level at all?
The box above tells you why (permission blocked, no device, device busy) with the steps for your system. Full guides: Windows 11 · Mac · browser permissions.

Questions, answered
Is my voice recorded or uploaded?
Only if you press Record, and then it stays in this page for playback. Nothing is sent anywhere.
The meter moves but people on calls can’t hear me.
Your mic works. Check which input device your calling app has selected, and that you are not muted there — see the Zoom, Teams, Discord and Meet guides.
Which microphone should I pick?
A headset or USB mic a few centimetres from your mouth. “Microphone Array” is the laptop’s built-in mics; a webcam mic is usually the worst option.
